Tongue & Lip-Tie Procedures: Does Laser vs. Scissors Matter?

April 30, 2018

Families with children seeking a tongue-tie procedure often have many valid questions. After all, when your child undergoes any procedure, it is up to the parents to be educated and make well-founded decisions about the care their children will receive. It is often asked if they should go to a particular tongue tie provider because they use lasers or scissors. In short, the tool used is much less important than your provider’s skill level and experience. Anyone can buy a laser, but do they have the proper knowledge to execute this procedure with care and precision?

How can a family know whether or not a provider will do a complete job when treating tongue ties?

While it may not be exactly apparent on the surface the expertise of a provider, there are a few questions you can ask to get an idea as to if this is the person you want to work with.

  • How many tongue tie procedures do you perform per month?
  • Do you treat posterior tongue ties as well?

Does it matter whether a provider uses a laser or scissors for the procedure?

Based solely on breastfeeding purposes, there is almost no difference between the results of procedures done with lasers or scissors. There has never been a study conducted on the result differences between these two methods, but we can provide solid differences between the two kinds of procedures:

  • The procedure conducted with scissors is faster than with lasers.
  • Parents are allowed in the room when their child is treated with scissors but have to leave when treated with lasers.
  • The decision is yours; we hope to have shed some light on this uncommon procedure. Any questions you may have can be directed to our office in Houston, TX, at Urbach Pediatric Dentistry.
