What You Should Know About Sedation Dentistry

October 9, 2018

Do you or a loved one suffer from anxiety when it comes to dental care? Been avoiding professional dental treatment due to your phobia? At Urbach Pediatric Dentistry we understand how scary dental anxiety can be and strive to make sure our patients can be as relaxed as possible during their care at our practice. Interested in sedation dentistry for your child’s next dental appointment? Contact us and let us know prior to their appointment, we’d be happy to discuss your options.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

When it comes to sedation dentistry, there are many options available for patients depending upon the practice they visit. These sedation dentistry options include:

Laughing Gas Sedation Dentistry

Laughing gas sedation can be a wonderful option for patients that experience mild to moderate dental anxiety and is administered using a tiny mask. Both laughing gas and oxygen are supplied to the patient, providing a relaxed, euphoric experience. Laughing gas sedation does not require a ride to/from your appointment and wears off within minutes.

Oral Sedation Dentistry

Oral sedation is a great option for those that have more moderate dental anxiety and is administered by prescribing an anti-anxiety medication prior to the appointment. Oral sedation provides a relaxed, calm experience while still allowing patients to communicate and follow directions. Oral sedation requires a ride to/from your appointment and can take hours to wear off fully.

IV Sedation Dentistry

IV sedation may be recommended if you experience more severe dental anxiety and is administered intravenously, allowing the patient to feel the effects within moments. Many patients that undergo IV sedation report having no memory of their procedure at all. A ride is required to and from your appointment, and we recommend relaxing for the rest of the day following your treatment and resuming activity the following day.
